Dan Mathieu is the founder of Exposé Mag, one of the longest lasting printed skateboard magazines in Canada. I am happy to have him be a part of the United Skateboard Photography Project!
Where are you currently located / living?
My girlfriend and I recently bought her grandfather’s house in Erinsville, Ontario. Erinsville is basically in the middle of nowhere, halfway between Montreal and Toronto. We have no neighbours, a bunch of chickens and turkeys and 2 massive gardens and if all goes well, we will have a nice bowl to skate by next spring.
Skater: Marc Tison
How old are you and how long have you been involved with photography?
I am 42 and I started borrowing my dad’s camera on the weekends to shoot photos with the homies back when I was 16 years old.
What type of camera do you shoot with?
Lately I have been stoked on the Nikon D810 and the Fuji X100t.
What is your favorite photography accessory other than your camera?
Not sure, I don’t use many accessories…Pocket Wizards are still cool. Also hard drives.
Skater: Js Lapierre
If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
If I had to choose one lens, I would look into my big bag with all the lenses ever made and I would pick the one lens that I think would work best for what I was about to shoot at that moment.
What makes a skate photograph original and unique: basically what is your idea of a good photo?
If it gets you stoked, it’s a good skate photo.
Name the first photographer that comes to your mind and why?
Robert Frank. I did not know photography could be like that.
Skater: Bob Lasalle
What do you feel is the most challenging thing about skateboard photography?
I don’t know…concerned citizens?
